  1. A general strike is a refusal to work by 
  2. employees in several key industries, with the 
  3. intention of paralysing the economic life of 
  4. a country. In British history, the General 
  5. Strike was a nationwide strike called by the 
  6. Trade Union Congress on 3 May 1926 in support 
  7. of the miners' union. Elsewhere, the general 
  8. strike was used as a political weapon by 
  9. anarchists and others, especially in Spain 
  10. and Italy.
